Irish singer Sinead O'Connor, one of the greatest icons of popular music in recent decades, has passed away at the age of 56, it has been announced.
O'Connor is best known for her well-known remake of Prince's song "Nothing Compares to You", which was a huge success all over the world. An iconic music video was also filmed for the song, focusing throughout on the singer's face.
Her songs "Mandinka", "Thank You for Hearing Me" and "Tears from the moon" are also known in Israel. She recorded a total of 11 albums. She performed in Israel in 1995.
O'Connor was a staunch critic of the Catholic Church, and in a famous appearance on Saturday Night Live in 1992, while singing a cover of Bob Marley's "War," she tore apart a picture of Pope John Paul II to protest the sexual abuse of children in Catholic institutions, a move that provoked much anger against her. In recent years, she converted to Islam and even changed her name to Shuhada Sadaqat.
O'Connor has four children. In early 2022, her third son, 17-year-old Shane, was found dead after missing several days.
